Spanish hurdler Enrique Llopis was in hospital on Sunday night after a horror fall in the 60 metres hurdles final at the European Indoor Championships.
The 22-year-old, who was a medal contender in the race, lay motionless on the track after he crashed into the final hurdle and smashed his head on the floor.
Medics quickly rushed to the aid of Llopis, who was shielded from the view of spectators by a white tent.
The crowd inside the Atakoy Arena in Istanbul fell silent as doctors treated the stricken athlete for five minutes.
Llopis was eventually carried off the track on a stretcher and in a neck brace, with a doctor from the Spanish team giving a thumbs-up, leading to applause from the stands.

‘The message we were looking forward to hearing. @llopis110 is fine and wants to thank you for all the support you have shown him in these last few hours,’ they said.
Llopis had won his semi-final and was in contention for a bronze medal in a race which was won by Switzerland’s Jason Joseph ahead of Poland’s Jakub Szymanski. Britain’s David King finished seventh.
The sickening incident came in the final event of four days of action in Istanbul.
Earlier, Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson and Jazmin Sawyers won gold medals in the 800 metres and long jump respectively.
